Protected Designation of Origin (PDO): products (agricultural or food products) identified by the name of a region, a specific place or (in exceptional cases) the name of a country, because their quality or characteristics are significantly or exclusively determined by the geographical environmen, including natural and human factors. The production, preparation and processing of the products take place within the determined geographical area.
Protected Geographical Indication (PGI): the name of an area, a specific place or (in exceptional cases) the name of a country, used to describe an agricultural product or a foodstuff that is originated in that area, place or country, has a specific quality, reputation or other characteristics attributed to its geographical origin and its production and / or processing and / or preparation take place in the defined geographical area.
The registration process requires the study and documentation of the specificity of the product, the detailed description of the specifications that characterize them.
It is addressed to collectives (Agricultural Cooperative, Municipal Authority, etc.) that are interested in the promotion and protection of a product in the area.
Benefits: gives prominence to the uniqueness of the product, the product of the specific region acquires a competitive advantage in relation to corresponding products, acquires a powerful marketing tool since the special mark of PDO and PGI products are recognizable both in the European Market and in other International markets.
